Ground protection mats create a temporary, more stable surface for people, vehicles and machinery while helping protect the ground underneath. They are commonly used where access is needed over grass, soil, mud, sand or other sensitive surfaces.

What are ground protection mats used for?

Ground mats are used to create temporary access roads, work platforms, walkways and parking areas. On site, they can reduce rutting and surface damage while giving vehicles a more reliable path to travel.

How do they work?

Individual mats are laid across the required route or work area. The right mat, layout and connector system depend on the ground conditions, vehicle type, wheel or track configuration and expected traffic.

For higher-traffic applications, mats can be joined with suitable connectors to help keep the surface aligned. Installation should allow for the natural movement of the ground and should be checked throughout the job.

Choosing the right mat

There is no one-size-fits-all mat. A good selection starts with the job, not the product name.

• Ground conditions: soft, wet or uneven ground needs a more considered solution than firm, level ground.
• Traffic: consider vehicle mass, axle loads, tyre or track width, turning and how often the route will be used.
• Access width and length: these determine the number of mats and whether you need one trackway, two wheel tracks or a full-width road.
• Site finish: grass, paving, sand and landscaped areas need different levels of protection and traction.
